Job Title: Membership Specialist

Reports To: Fraternal Director



This position is primarily responsible for developing, retaining and increasing membership within the Sons of Norway organization. Develops programs, initiatives and policies designed to maintain and increase membership.  Supports districts and lodges in the execution of those programs by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develops and implements membership recruitment and retention programs in support of Sons of Norway’s strategic goals.
  • Posts recruitment and retention information on social media.
  • Researches recruitment and retention strategies, in partnership with other fraternal organizations, to recommend best practices within the Sons of Norway organization. Implement approved strategies.
  • Develops membership marketing and promotional materials in collaboration with the Communications Department.
  • Develops training programs for lodges.
  • Develops and reports the status of recruitment and retention contests and initiatives to Fraternal Director and Sons of Norway management.
  • Develops and implements, with support from local lodges, strategies for lodges and districts to increase community awareness of the organization and/or to attract individuals to join.
  • Coordinates and supports communication between lodges and district officers about membership recruitment, retention and community involvement.
  • Advises lodges and districts on new lodge starts and closures/disbandings, and ensures that the correct procedure is followed.
  • Contributes to Resource, Viking magazine and other publications.
  • Provides back-up for the Member Services Coordinator.
  • Coordinates activities for NorwayConnects.
  • Posts recruitment and retention information on social media.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Expereience:

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:                                        

Ability to read and interpret documents such as instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of: Internet Software; Spreadsheet Software (Excel); Word Processing Software (Word); Electronic Mail Software ; Presentation software (PowerPoint).

Other Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Liberal Studies, Marketing, Nonprofit Management, Public Administration or similar.
  • Minimum 2 to 4 years’ experience in a similar position.
  • Experience in promoting membership in a fraternal benefit society or a nonprofit membership based organization/association.
  • Experience directing and working with/coordinating volunteers.
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Excellent phone manner.
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills (phone & email).
  • Attention to detail.
  • Experience using Excel, Word, a membership database program, social media and email.
